The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher 2002

This article was previously published under Q285381

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install the Microsoft Publisher Imagesetter or the Microsoft Publisher Color Printer on your computer, you may be unable to locate the printer drivers. When you run the Add Printer Wizard and select Generic as the manufacturer, the Microsoft Publisher Imagesetter and the Microsoft Publisher Color Printer do not appear as expected in the list of available printers.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you have Microsoft Publisher installed to Run from Network. When this is true, the driver file (Mspub.inf) that is needed to install the Microsoft Publisher Imagesetter and the Microsoft Publisher Color Printer is not copied onto your computer. The driver file remains available on the network administrative share from which you installed Publisher.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, install the printer driver from the network administrative share from which you installed Publisher. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
  2. Double-click Add Printer.
  3. Follow the steps in the wizard until you reach the dialog box that contains the printer manufacturers and models.
  4. Click Have Disk, and then click Browse.
  5. Browse to the network administrative share from which you installed Publisher, and then search for the Mspub.inf file.

The file should be located in the FILES\PFILES\MSOFFICE\OFFICE10 folder on the network administrative share.

For example, type the following in the Copy manufacturer's files from box:

    \\network_administrative_share_name\FILES\PFILES\MSOFFICE\OFFICE10

  6. Select Microsoft Publisher Imagesetter as the model, and then continue with the installation.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Many home users do not have a PostScript printer but find that they need one if they are preparing a file for a commercial printer. Publisher includes two PostScript printer drivers: Microsoft Publisher Imagesetter and Microsoft Publisher Color Printer. These are generic PostScript Level 1 devices.
