SYMPTOMS

When you are performing a clean Windows 2000 installation by using a Windows 2000 Upgrade CD-ROM on a computer that has two CD-ROM drives, and you are prompted to insert a qualifying media CD-ROM, if you replace the Upgrade disc with the qualifying media disc in the first CD-ROM drive, the following error message may appear:
Qualifying operating system was not found.

NOTE: A qualifying media CD-ROM validates that you are genuinely upgrading from an earlier version of Windows.

A "clean" installation of Windows means that you are installing Windows either on a blank hard disk or into a folder other than the folder where an existing version of Windows was installed.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Windows 2000 Setup automatically queries only the second CD-ROM drive when it searches for qualifying media.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, place the qualifying media CD-ROM in the second drive, and then prompt Setup to search again. Setup then continues normally.
