Error Message Occurs When Installing Mobile Information Server (285066)

SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft Mobile Information Server by using the /vforestprep=1 option, if you attempt to install Mobile Information Server by running Setup, you may receive the following error message:
Setup has determined that you need to add users and groups before proceeding. Either run the setup or setup.exe /vdomainprep=1 with domain admin permissions.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because you must run the domainprep option before you complete the installation. The error message implies that the you must manually add users and groups. However, this is not necessary because the domainprep switch completes this task.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, run Setup.exe with the /vdomainprep=1 switch. For example, c:\path\setup.exe /vdomainprep=1. After this command completes, run Setup.exe to install Mobile Information Server.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
