This article was previously published under Q284436 SUMMARY
The Excel 97 Developer's Kit contains a description of the file format for Unicode strings on pages 264-266. Extended strings, which may appear in files created by Far East versions of Excel, are documented on pages 265-266. In that description, the Developer's Kit states that the length of each formatting run for a rich extended string is 8 bytes in length. This is incorrect. The correct length of a formatting run for a rich extended string in Excel's BIFF format is 4 bytes, the same as that of normal rich strings. See page 265 for a description and example of normal rich strings.
