If you set up two X.400 connectors that use the X.25 transport stack for redundancy and one link stops working, mail may not flow over the second link. When the two links are working, both connectors are correctly used. The following error message may be logged in the Application event log:
ID 4287
Category X.400 Service
Description: An internal MTA occurred. Contact Microsoft Product Support Services. Error code=8650 [POP4 POP4 DOWN4 18] (14)
CAUSE
This problem can occur if the message transfer agent (MTA) sets up two timer events for each timer event that the MTA processes. The MTA is so busy waiting for timer events that the MTA cannot fail over to the remaining good connector.
