OL2002: Printer Name Shows as "?????" or Error Message Appears When You Try to Print a Message (284360)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to print a message that is in plain text or Rich Text Format, Outlook 2002 displays one or more of the following behaviors:
  • The printer name is displayed as ??????????
  • Selecting this printer and then clicking OK results in the following error message:
    There was an error when printing started. To check the printer setup, double-click the printers icon in Windows Control Panel.
  • If you have another printer set as the default printer, Outlook sends the print job to that printer instead.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the name of the printer that you are trying to print to includes Unicode characters.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use Microsoft Word as your e-mail editor, and then print the message to the specified printer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
