SYMPTOMS

When a Windows Millennium Edition-based computer with two Ultra Direct Memory Access (UDMA) drives resumes from an S3 "Deep Sleep" state, it may stop responding (hang) and display a black screen. Also, if this problem occurs several times, the S3 Deep Sleep state may be disabled on your computer.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if your computer is unable to obtain access to the paging device (the UDMA drive) because it was locked.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use either of the following methods:

Disable DMA on One of the UDMA Drives

You can disable DMA on one of the UDMA drives to work around this problem, however, this may not be desirable as it can have adverse effects on read and write throughput to the drive. Note that if you choose to disable DMA on one of the UDMA drives, Microsoft recommends that you disable DMA on the least-used drive. To disable DMA on one of the UDMA drives:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
  2. On the Device Manager tab, double-click the Disk drives branch to expand it, and then double-click the hard disk you want to view.
  3. On the Settings tab, click to clear the DMA check box, click OK, click OK, and then restart your computer.

Use the Msconfig.exe Tool to Disable the S3 Deep Sleep State

To disable the S3 Deep Sleep state:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then press ENTER.
  2. Click the Advanced tab, and then click to clear the Enable Deep Sleep check box.
  3. Click OK, and then restart your computer. Note that you can enable the the S3 Deep Sleep state by repeating these steps, and clicking to select the Enable Deep Sleep check box in step 2.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
