SYMPTOMS

In earlier versions of Windows, when you rename a read-only folder, a confirmation prompt is displayed that asks if you are sure you want to rename the folder. In Microsoft Windows XP, this prompt is not displayed, and the folder is immediately renamed.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

This feature was changed because many folders that are marked as read-only are named by the computer and not by the user. For example, a folder may be marked as read-only if it has a custom icon or contains a Desktop.ini file.
