Conflicts between the Active Directory Client Extension and Windows 98 hotfix files (283261)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition
- Microsoft Windows 98
This article was previously published under Q283261 SYMPTOMSIf you install the Active Directory Client Extension (Dsclient.exe) for Windows 98 on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, you may experience one or more of the following problems: - If you install the Active Directory Client Extension after you install certain hotfixes, you may lose the functionality that was originally provided by the hotfixes.
- If you install certain hotfixes after you install the Active Directory Client Extension, the hotfix may not provide the expected, documented functionality. For example, the hotfix may not resolve the problem that it was designed to resolve.
- If you install certain hotfixes after you install the Active Directory Client Extension, some functionality that was originally provided by the Active Directory Client Extension may be lost, but the functionality that is expected for the hotfix may be provided, such as resolving the problem that the hotfix was created to resolve.
CAUSE These problems may occur if any one of the following conditions is true: - The versions of certain system files that are installed by the Active Directory Client Extension provide additional functionality that is not provided in the versions of the files that are included in Windows 98 and in Windows 98 Second Edition.
- The additional Active Directory Client Extension functionality that is provided by the system files that the Active Directory Client Extension installs is not included in the hotfix versions of the same files for Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition.
- When you install the Active Directory Client Extension, the same version of these system files is installed on Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition. It does not install an operating-system-specific version of each of these files. Therefore, the Active Directory Client Extension versions of these files are later than any hotfix versions for Windows 98. This prevents Windows 98 hotfixes from being correctly installed by using safe version detection.
- The Dsclient.exe does not perform safe version detection and may overwrite later (hotfix) versions of system files that have been installed.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Active Directory Client Extension for Windows 98.
