  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

This article was previously published under Q283129

SYMPTOMS

When you are using the Start menu, if you rename an item on the Programs menu, the original shortcut for the item is also renamed. For example, if you click Start, click More Programs, click Accessories, and then click Notepad, Microsoft Notepad is displayed on the Start menu as a frequently used program. If you rename Notepad on the Start menu, Notepad is renamed in the Accessories menu as well.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because items that are listed on the Start menu are directly linked to the original shortcuts. If you rename a program on the Start menu, the original shortcut is also renamed.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
