XADM: Exchange 2000 Store Does Not Start with Event IDs 9538 and 5000 (283098)

SYMPTOMS

The Exchange 2000 information store does not start and the following event IDs are generated:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeIS
Event Category: General
Event ID: 9538
Description:
Error 0x80070057 calling StrInitialize in REAPI.DLL.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeIS
Event Category: General
Event ID: 5000
Description:Unable to initialize the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service. Error 0x80070057.

CAUSE

These errors occur if any of the following values are missing on the Server object's Network Address attribute in Active Directory.

NOTE: These are the default Server object values.

ncacn_vns_spp:Server Name
netbios:Server Name
ncacn_np:Server Name
ncacn_spx:Server Name
ncacn_ip_tcp:fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of Server
ncalrpc:Server Name

RESOLUTION

Because other attributes may be missing, it is recommended that you reinstall the server. To do this, insert the Exchange 2000 Server CD, run the Setup program, and click Reinstall. This rewrites all the needed attributes in Active Directory.

NOTE: You do not need to uninstall the server before you reinstall it.
