WD2002: Table Formatting Changes After You Split Cells in Selected Column (282596)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2002

This article was previously published under Q282596

SYMPTOMS

Case 1

When you select a column of a table that you applied AutoFormatting to, and then you click Split Cells on the Table menu, the formatting to the left of the selected column is lost. The cells to the right retain their formatting. Formatting from the topmost cell is applied to the split cells in the selected column.

Case 2

Behavior similar to that in Case 1 occurs in tables that contain direct formatting. In this case, the formatting to the left and right of the selected column is retained. However, formatting from the topmost cell is applied to the split cells in the selected column.

CAUSE

Case 1

This behavior occurs if both of the following conditions are true:
  • You apply a style that contains shading to the table. To apply a style to a table, select the table, and then click Table AutoFormat on the Table menu. (For a list of Table AutoFormat styles with which this problem occurs, see the "More Information" section of this article.)

    -and-

  • You select a column other than the first column and then click Split Cells on the Table menu.
Case 2

  • You directly apply shading to the table. (To directly apply shading to a table, select the table, and then click Borders and Shading on the Format menu.)

    -and-

  • You select a column other than the first column and then click Split Cells on the Table menu.

WORKAROUND

Case 1

To work around this problem, reapply the table style. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Select the table.
  2. On the Table menu, click Table AutoFormat.
  3. In the Table Styles box, select the style that you want, and then click Apply.
Case 2

  1. Select the table.
  2. On the Format menu, click Borders and Shading.
  3. Click the Shading tab. Select the options that you want, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
