This article was previously published under Q282137

SYMPTOMS

When you open a Microsoft Word 2002 document that contains an embedded Microsoft Excel 2002 worksheet, which, in turn, contains a remote Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) link in one of its cells, the DDE link to the client data source does not update the cell's values properly.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the embedded Excel worksheet's Update Remote References setting is lost when the Word document is saved.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, reselect Update Remote References when you open the Word document. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Microsoft Word.
  2. On the File menu, click Open, and then browse to and select the Word document that contains the embedded Excel worksheet.
  3. Click the Open button.
  4. When the document opens, double-click the embedded worksheet object.
  5. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  6. Click the Calculation tab, and then click to select the Update Remote References check box.
  7. Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
