WBEMEventViewer Does Not Display Old Event (281508)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Management Instrumentation 1.5, when used with:
    • the operating system: Microsoft Windows 2000

This article was previously published under Q281508

SYMPTOMS

Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) event objects that are stored in the WBEMEventViewer's EventList control become invalid after approximately 20 minutes. When an event object is invalidated, it is no longer possible to display the contents of the event by double clicking its entry in the list.

CAUSE

WMI uses a custom DCOM Marshaler (Fastprox.dll) to pass event objects (IWbemClassObject) from the WMI service (WinMgmt) to the WBEMEventViewer utility. This marshaler (that is also known as a proxy-stub) which controls the lifetime of the event objects, is automatically unloaded from memory when no events are delivered for a predetermined amount of time. When the marshaler is unloaded any events in the WBEMEventViewer's EventList become invalid.
