WD2002: Recipient Counter in Mail Merge Wizard Displays Only One Digit (280550)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2002

This article was previously published under Q280550

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Mail Merge Wizard in Word, the recipient number on the fifth step may display only the first digit of a two-digit number.

For example, the recipient number for the 10th to 19th records might be displayed as "1".

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you start the Mail Merge Wizard using the keyboard commands ALT+T+E+M.

Word does not correctly update the layout of the work pane to show two-digit numbers in the Mail Merge Wizard until the work pane loses the keyboard focus.

RESOLUTION

This behavior can be avoided by using the mouse to click Mail Merge Wizard (on the Tools menu, point to Letter and Mailings).

WORKAROUND

To cause the work pane to lose keyboard focus, and all the digits to be displayed, use any one of the following methods:
  • Click anywhere on the document.

    -or-
  • Minimize and restore Word.

    -or-
  • Switch to another program, and then switch back to Word.
Once something else has focus, the work pane updates, and then displays two digits.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
