POP3 Connector Properties Dialog Box May Not Respond After You Make Changes to the POP3 Connector (279999)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Small Business Server 2000

This article was previously published under Q279999

SYMPTOMS

If you make changes to the Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS) Connector for POP3 Mailboxes, and then click Apply or OK, the POP3 Connector Properties dialog box may stop responding (hang). You may observe the following behavior:
  • A persistent hourglass icon is displayed in the POP3 Connector Properties dialog box.
  • The state of the POP3 Connector service is displayed as Stopping.

CAUSE

When you make changes to the POP3 Connector, these changes take effect after the POP3 Connector is stopped and restarted. By default, the POP3 Connector is restarted automatically when you click OK or Apply in the POP3 Connector Properties dialog box after you make changes. However, if the POP3 Connector is configured to use a router trigger before it attempts to download mail, the POP3 Connector waits until the program that is started by the router trigger terminates before the changes are applied and the service is restarted.

If the program that is started by the router trigger is still active or is not responding, the POP3 Connector Properties dialog box may not respond and the service does not restart until program that is defined in the router trigger quits.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, use Task Manager to end the task that is defined as the router trigger. After the task has ended, the changes made to the POP3 Connector take effect.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

Router triggers are programs that are used to force a demand dial router to establish a connection to the Internet. For example, a ping command may be used to establish an Internet connection by "pinging" an Internet protocol (IP) address.

Also, if you configure the POP3 Connector to use a router trigger when it attempts to download mail, the mail is not downloaded from your Internet service provider (ISP) until the router trigger has finished running. If the program that is defined in the router trigger fails or stops responding, the POP3 Connector is unable to download POP3 mail. Because the router trigger is still attempting to run, even if you click Retrieve Now, nothing happens.
