Mobile Information Server Installation Fails When Terminal Server Is Running in Application Mode (279826)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Mobile Information 2001 Server on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based server that is running Terminal Services in Application Mode, Setup does not work and you receive the following error message:
Error 29020:Failed to populate AD. error no: 0x80070005, error message: access is denied

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Terminal Services are running in Application Mode. Mobile Information Server is not supported when you are running Terminal Services in Application Mode.

WORKAROUND

Change Terminal Services to Remote Administration Mode, and then reinstall Mobile Information Server.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
