This article contains information about how to use the Protection section, and shows you a sample formula to use the Protection section.

Every Microsoft Visio shape is described in its own ShapeSheet spreadsheet, which contains information about the shape's geometry and its other properties.

To display the ShapeSheet of a shape, select the shape, and then click Show ShapeSheet on the Window menu. You can also enable developer mode to have right-click access to the Show ShapeSheet command. To have right-click access to the Show ShapeSheet command, follow these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Advanced tab.
  2. Click to select the Run in developer mode check box.
  3. Click OK.
Right-click any shape, and note that the shortcut menu now contains the Show ShapeSheet command.

The Protection section shows the current lock settings set with the Protection command plus a few additional locks that can be set only in a ShapeSheet window. Locking helps prevent inadvertent changes to the shape, but does not prevent Visio from resetting values in other circumstances. It also does not protect against changes made in the ShapeSheet window.

Here are some facts about the Protection section:
  • Set a cell's value to a non-zero to enable protection, or 0 (zero) to disable it.
  • Some options are also available in the Protection dialog box.
  • Setting values in the Protection Section provides a user with visual clues about what can't be done.
Here is a detailed explanation of each section of the Protection Section:

LockAspect The LockAspect cell locks the aspect ratio of the shape so that the shape can be sized only proportionally; it cannot be sized in a single dimension. True locks the aspect, False leaves the aspect unlocked.

LockBegin The LockBegin cell locks the beginning point (BeginX and BeginY) of a 1-D shape to a specific location. True means the beginning point is locked. False means the beginning point is not locked.

LockCalcWH The LockCalcWH cell locks a shape's selection rectangle so that it cannot be recalculated when a vertex is edited or a row type is changed in the Geometry section. True means Width and Height cannot be recalculated. False means Width and Height can be recalculated.

LockCrop The LockCrop cell locks an object from another program against being cropped with the Crop tool. True means shape cannot be cropped. False means shape can be cropped.

LockDelete The LockDelete cell locks the shape against being deleted. True means shape cannot be deleted. False means shape can be deleted.

LockEnd The LockEnd cell locks the ending point (EndX and EndY) of a 1-D shape to a specific location. True means ending point is locked. False means ending point is not locked.

LockFormat The LockFormat cell locks the formatting of a shape so that it cannot be changed. True means formatting cannot be changed. False means formatting can be changed.

LockGroup The LockGroup cell locks a group against ungrouping. True means the group cannot be ungrouped. False means the group can be ungrouped.

LockHeight - The LockHeight cell locks the height of the shape so that its height remains unchanged when the shape is sized. True, height is locked. False, height is not locked.

LockMoveX The LockMoveX cell locks the horizontal position of the shape so that it cannot be moved horizontally. True means horizontal position is locked. False means horizontal position is not locked.

LockMoveY The LockMoveY cell locks the vertical position of the shape so that it cannot be moved vertically. True means vertical position is locked. False means vertical position is not locked.

LockRotate The LockRotate cell locks the shape against being rotated with the Rotation tool or the Rotate Left or Rotate Right commands. True means shape cannot be rotated. False means shape can be rotated.

NOTE: The LockRotate cell does not prevent a 1-D shape from being rotated by dragging an endpoint. To lock a 1-D shape against rotation, set LockWidth to a nonzero value.

LockSelect The LockSelect cell prevents a shape from being selected. In order for LockSelect to take effect, the Shapes text box must be selected in the Protect Document dialog box. True means shape cannot be selected. False means shape can be selected.

LockTextEdit The LockTextEdit cell locks the text of a shape so it cannot be edited. However, the text may still be formatted by applying a style using the Font Style list or the options in the Text dialog box. True means the text cannot be edited. False means the text can be edited.

LockVtxEdit The LockVtxEdit cell locks the vertices of a shape so that they cannot be edited with any tools on the toolbar. True means vertices cannot be edited. False means vertices can be edited.

LockWidth - The LockWidth cell locks the width of the shape so that its width remains unchanged when the shape is sized. True means the width is locked. False means the width is not locked.
