PUB2002: Publication Retains Large File Size When Pages Are Deleted (279368)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher 2002

This article was previously published under Q279368

SYMPTOMS

When you delete pages in a catalog, Web page, or newsletter publication that was created in Microsoft Publisher, the size of your publication may not decrease as expected. For example, if you delete a page that contains a graphic image that is 3 megabytes (MB) in size, the publication file size does not decrease by 3 MB.

CAUSE

Graphic images from deleted pages are stored for future use in the Microsoft Publisher Design Gallery. This behavior only occurs with catalog, Web page, or newsletter publications.

RESOLUTION

To delete images that are stored in the Microsoft Publisher Design Gallery, follow these steps:
  1. On the Objects toolbar (usually on the left side of the Publisher screen), click the Design Gallery Object icon.
  2. Click the Extra Content tab.
  3. Click Delete All to delete all content that is not used in the current publication. Alternatively, select individual images, and then click Delete to delete the individual images.
NOTE: If you delete graphic images from the page before you delete the page, the graphic images will not be stored in the Microsoft Publisher Design Gallery.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
