Garbage Characters Are Displayed When Creating Windows 2000 Boot Disks in Windows 98 (279258)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to create boot disks for Windows 2000 in Windows 98 by using the Makeboot.exe utility, garbage characters are displayed on the screen. However, if you press ENTER, you are able to create the boot disks.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, edit the Config.sys file in Windows 98 by typing REM before the line that contains the "COUNTRY=" driver. After you restart the computer, when you run Makeboot.exe, the correct text is displayed.

MORE INFORMATION

This issue has occurred on the German version of the Windows 2000 CD-ROM and the English version of the Windows 2000 CD-ROM.

If you are using Windows NT or Windows 2000, use the Makebt32.exe utility to create boot disks.
