BUG: Mstsc.exe Remains in Memory After You Use a Desktop Shortcut (279104)

SYMPTOMS

When you use a desktop shortcut to connect to a terminal server, the connection utility Mstsc.exe may remain in memory after you click Cancel.

CAUSE

This issue occurs when you use Windows CE 2.12 with the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) 5.0 update for Windows CE to connect to a terminal server from a shortcut on the desktop. This issue only occurs if you cancel the connection attempt before the terminal server responds to your connection request.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, use either of the following methods:
  • Use the Connection Manager to connect to a terminal server.

    -or-
  • Modify the Project.reg file:

    1. Open Projectoakroot\Files\Project.reg.
    2. Add the following line:

      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client]
      "CEConfig"="WBT"

    3. Save and close Project.reg.
    4. Rebuild the image.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
