PRB: Error "Cannot Set the Application Root for This Web Application" When You Create a New Project (279018)

When you try to create a new Visual InterDev project or connect to an existing Web application, you may receive the following error message:
Cannot set the application root for this Web application.
CAUSE
This problem can occur when the temporary folder (for example, C:\Temp) is corrupted. NOTE: This error can also occur when FrontPage 2000 Extensions change the folder security model. For additional information, click the article number below

RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, re-create your temporary folder as follows:
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- In Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, click Environment.
In Microsoft Windows 2000, click the Advanced tab, and then click Environment Variables. - Note the path that is specified for the TEMP and TMP variables (usually C:\Temp). Delete this temporary folder, and then re-create it.
- Restart the system.
NOTE: This should be done on the client's computer first, then on the server.
