How to Use Command-Line Switches When Installing Office 2000 SP-2
The switches for Sp2upd.exe are the standard IExpress package
switches. However, Ohotfix9.exe, contained in the Sp2upd.exe download, also has
its own switches, which can be passed to Ohotfix9.exe through the IExpress
package command line.
To create a verbose Windows Installer log file
(with the default hotfix file name in the default OfficeHotfix folder), use the
following command line:
SP2UPD.EXE /C:"OHOTFIX9.EXE /v"
Note The Ohotfix9.exe detection log file, "OFFICE 2000 SR-1
HOTFIX(####).LOG", is created as well.
To apply the SP2 update in
completely silent mode, use the following command line:
path\sp2upd.exe /q /c:"ohotfix9.exe /q /c"
This command line is useful in circumstances where an
administrator is pushing out the update by using a technology such as Systems
Management Server or does not want users to have the ability to cancel the
application of the update.
The other command-line switches for the
Office 2000 SP-2 update include the following.
Switch Function
----------------------------------------------------------------------
/t Sets the title in the dialog box displayed when the SP-2
update is finished or when it is canceled. If you pass a
title with spaces on the command line with Sp2upd.exe,
use double quotation marks around the string. For example:
<PATH>\SP2UPD.EXE /C:"OHOTFIX9.EXE /T ""MY NEW TITLE"""
/q Quiet UI mode. Silent, with no user interface. If you
want a completely silent installation, you must
include /q for Sp2upd.exe, as in the following:
<PATH>\SP2UPD.EXE /Q /C:"OHOTFIX9.EXE /Q"
/r Reduced UI mode. You see the final "success" dialog box
and any error messages.
/c Extracts and copies the files in the IExpress package to
the OfficeHotfix folder. This can be used in situations
where the files are needed after a restart to complete
patching. This must be passed through the IExpress
command line. For example:
SP2UPD.EXE /C:"OHOTFIX9.EXE /C /V"
How to Verify That the Update Is Successful
To verify that the installation of the update was successful,
view the version number displayed in the
About dialog box in any of the Office programs. To do this, click
About <program name> on the
Help menu in any of the Office programs.
The following table
lists the different version numbers for each of the Office programs.
Office Program Version in "About" Dialog Box

Microsoft Access (9.0.4402 SR-1)
Microsoft Excel (9.0.4402 SR-1)
Microsoft FrontPage 4.0.2.4426
Microsoft Outlook (9.0.0.4527)

Alternatively, you can compare the
version numbers of the files listed in the following table with the same files
on your hard disk. These version numbers are visible when Microsoft Windows
2000 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) is running on your computer.

Log Files Created During Office 2000 SP-2 Installation
As with any post SR-1/SR-1a update, Office 2000 SP-2 creates log
files in the \Temp\OfficeHotfix folder. The log files have names similar to the
following:
OFFICE 2000 SR-1 HOTFIX(####).LOG
OFFICE 2000 SR-1 HOTFIX(####)_MSIEXEC.LOG
where #### is a four-digit number starting at 0001. These numbers
are incremented by 1 each time that you run a post-SR-1 update. The first log
file is created by OHOTFIX9.EXE, and the second log file is created by the
Windows Installer. These matching pairs of Setup and Windows Installer log
files have the same number (####) in the log file names, so you can quickly
pair them up.
Because Office 2000 SP-2 log file names are just like
any post SR-1 update log file, it will not be readily apparent which log files
belong to your SP-2 update installation. The most logical way to identify
Office 2000 SP-2 log files is the number (####) in the log file names. The
highest numbered pair belongs to the latest post SR-1 update installation, so
if you run only Office 2000 SP-2, these are the correct log files. However, the
definitive way to identify the SP-2 log files is to open the OHOTFIX9.EXE log
file, OFFICE 2000 SR-1 HOTFIX(####).LOG, and look at the second line in the log
file. By default, the OHOTFIX9.EXE log file contains the following string on
the second line:
Command line: /c /t "Microsoft Office SP-2"
