XADM: Error Message 2147491681 When You Attempt to Join Exchange 2000 to Exchange 5.5 Site (277721)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server to join a Microsoft Exchange 5.5 site, the installation process fails to create Site Replication Service (SRS), and the Active Directory connector log file contains an entry similar to the following:

[12:58:27] (2147491681) LDAP search result on directory [mailserver] for entry 'cn=Microsoft MTA,cn=[mailserver2],cn=Servers,cn=Configuration,ou=Domain1,o=COM' was unsuccessful with error:[0x1] Operations Error. (Connection Agreement 'Config CA_Domain1_mailserver2' #1516)

The mailserver2 is an Exchange 2000 Server computer in the Exchange 5.5 site that has been removed from the site.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if the mailserver2 has been removed from the Exchange 5.5 site without removing its Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) connector from the Exchange 5.5 connection container. The installation process fails to replicate this SMTP connector because it belongs to a non-existing server.

RESOLUTION

To remove the SMTP connector from Exchange 5.5 Admin raw mode, follow these steps:

WARNING: If you use the raw mode of the Exchange Server Administrator program (admin /r) incorrectly, serious problems may occur that may require you to reinstall Microsoft Windows NT Server, Microsoft Exchange Server, or both. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems that result from using raw mode incorrectly can be solved. Use raw mode at your own risk.

Start the Microsoft Exchange Server Administrator program in raw mode by typing the following at a command prompt:
c:\exchsrvr\bin\admin.exe /r
Navigate to the connections container and select the SMTP connector that was created in the non-existing server.
On the Edit menu, click Delete Raw Object.
