SYMPTOMS

When you scan a document by using any of the programs that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article, the scan may stop responding (hang), quit unexpectedly, or produce an image that is not satisfactory.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if any of the following conditions exist:
  • The scanner driver is damaged or outdated.
  • The scanner options are not configured correctly.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order that they appear.

Install the Latest Scanner Driver

To obtain and install the latest scanner driver that is available for your scanner, contact the manufacturer of your scanner or click the Help menu, and then click Scanner and Digital Camera Help. Click the following link in this Help topic:

Finding scanner and digital camera manufacturers on the WWW

If the issue continues to occur, continue to the next method.

Confirm the Configuration of the Scanner

To confirm if the scanner is configured correctly, see the Scanning help topics found in Online Help for your version of Picture It! To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Click the Show My Pictures and Projects tab, and then click Scanner.
  2. Verify that your scanner is in the list, and then click Scan.

If your scanner stops responding (hangs), cancel the scan. Find any JPEG file on your computer or download one from the Internet and then open it to the tray.
  3. Double-click the picture in the tray.
  4. On the View menu, click Options.
  5. Click Scanner/Camera Options.
  6. In the Scanner Performance box, click Normal.
  7. Click OK, and then click OK again.
In Picture It! 7.0:

Enhanced mode uses your computer's memory to download pictures faster.

Normal mode does not use your computer's memory and downloads pictures slower than the enhanced mode.

If you experience issues downloading pictures by using the enhanced mode, set the performance mode to Normal, and then try again.

To set scanner options:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click Scanner/Camera options.
  3. Under Scanner performance, click Normal or click Enhanced.
  4. Click OK, and then click OK again.
Note The Scanner Performance setting applies to all of the scanners that are attached to your computer.

Test to see if the issue is resolved.

If the issue continues to occur, continue to the next method.

Use the Your Scanner Software Feature

To use the Your Scanner Software feature:

  6. Click Your Scanner Software.
  7. In the Scanner Performance box, click Enhanced.
  8. Click OK, and then click OK again.
Test to see if the issue is resolved.

If the issue continues to occur, repeat steps 1 through 8, except this time click Normal in step 7.

When you use Picture It! 7.0 you can scan your picture by using your scanner's software:
  1. Connect your scanner to your computer, and then turn on the scanner.
  2. On the File menu, point to Get Picture From, and then click Scanner.
  3. Under Click a scanner, select a scanner.

Alternatively, you can change the scanner type.
  4. Click Change scanner type.

  6. Put your picture in the scanner.
  7. Select My scanner software.
  8. Click Scan, and then click Done.
Test to see if the issue is resolved.

If the issue continues to occur, continue to the next method.
