WD2002: Cannot Dictate an @ Symbol When You Create an E-Mail Address (275981)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2002

This article was previously published under Q275981

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word, when you use the Speech command on the Tools menu, and you attempt to dictate an e-mail address such as joseph@microsoft.com, the speech recognition software creates the following text:

Joseph at Microsoft.com

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because you cannot create the @ (commercial at) symbol by dictating "at."

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, if you want the computer to type the @ symbol, you must dictate the words "at sign." For example, dictate the following:

Joseph at sign microsoft.com

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

To dictate text into a Word document, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click to select the Speech check box.

A Speech command bar appears near the top of the screen.
  2. If the Dictation command does not appear on the Speech command bar, click Microphone.
  3. Click Dictation.
  4. Speak into the microphone.
NOTE: If your computer does not have a built-in microphone, a microphone must be connected to your sound adapter card.
