WD2002: Applying the Normal Style Does Not Remove All Font Formatting (275957)
The information in this article applies to:
This article was previously published under Q275957 SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Word, when you create a style for a paragraph (paragraph A), and you then copy that style to another paragraph (paragraph B), the paragraph A style is copied to paragraph B as expected. However, if you modify the style of part or all of paragraph B, and you then select both paragraphs and attempt to apply the Normal style, part (but not all) of the previous style may remain unchanged in paragraph B.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur when you attempt to change both (or all) paragraphs at the same time with a global change, as in the following example:
- Start Word.
- On the Format menu, click Styles and Formatting.
The Styles and Formatting pane appears. - In a new Word document, type two paragraphs that contain at least three words each.
- Select paragraph one.
- On the Formatting toolbar, click the arrow on the Font Color button, and then click Blue.
A new style appears, named "Blue." - Select paragraph two, and then click Blue in the Styles and Formatting pane.
Paragraph two is now formatted with the style "Blue." - Select the second word in paragraph two, and then click Bold on the Formatting toolbar.
A new style is created, named "Bold, Blue." - Select both paragraphs, and then click the Normal style in the Styles and Formatting pane.
Note that both paragraphs have the Normal style formatting, but the Bold style is still applied to the second word in paragraph two. Also note that the Bold, Blue style has disappeared and is replaced with the Bold style.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, reapply the style that you want to the affected text. To do so, follow these steps:
- Select the text that you want to change.
- On the Format menu, click Styles and Formatting.
- In the Styles and Formatting pane, click to select the style that you want to apply.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
