This article was previously published under Q275956

SYMPTOMS

When you change the style in the heading of a subdocument in Outline view, only part of the style change appears when you expand the subdocument in the master document, as in the following example:
  1. Start Microsoft Word.
  2. On the View menu, click Outline.
  3. Create three paragraphs in the document.
  4. Select the second paragraph, and then click Create Subdocument on the Outlining toolbar.
  5. Select the third paragraph, and then click Create Subdocument on the Outlining toolbar.
  6. On the Format menu, click Styles and Formatting.
  7. Select the second paragraph, and then click the Normal style in the Styles and Formatting pane.
  8. Select the third paragraph, and then click the Normal style in the Styles and Formatting pane.
  9. On the File menu click Save.
  10. Name the document, click Save, and then close the document.
  11. On the File menu, click the first subdocument to open it.
  12. Select a word and format it with the Heading 1 style.
  13. Save and close the subdocument.
  14. Open the second subdocument.
  15. Select a word and format it with the Heading 1 style.
  16. Click the arrow next to Heading 1, and then click Modify.
  17. In the Modify Style dialog box, click the Italic button, and then click OK.
  18. Save and close the second subdocument.
  19. On the File menu, click the master document to open it.
  20. On the Outlining toolbar, click Expand Subdocuments.
Note that the master document has the default font size (typically 12 points), and both of the subdocuments retain the font size of the Heading 1 style, but neither subdocument has the italic formatting.

This same behavior also occurs with the font color formatting. However, when the font type is changed, the font type will change for all subdocuments.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, you can create a new style and apply it to the individual headings the way you want.

For more information about modifying formatting style, click Microsoft Word Help on the Help menu, type modify a style in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topics returned.

STATUS
