WD98: Accented Characters Are Not Displayed Correctly in Word 95 and Word 6 (275945)

SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Word 95 or Microsoft Word 6 to open a document that was created in Microsoft Word 98, and the document contains accented characters (such as a grave (`), acute ('), circumflex (^), umlaut (..), or tilde (~), the accented characters are not displayed correctly.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use Word 98 to save the file in Word 6.0/95 format, and then open the file in Word 95 or Word 6.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
