SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to open a multilevel embedded object (an embedded object that is embedded inside another embedded object), when you double-click the innermost embedded object to open it, you receive an error message similar to the following:
Application name can't start the application required to open this object. An error occurred and this feature is no longer functioning properly. Would you like to repair this feature now?
If you click No, you receive an error message similar to the following:
This object was created in application name. This application is not available to open this object. Make sure the application is properly installed and that it has not been deleted, moved, or renamed.
For example, after you insert an embedded Microsoft Graph Chart object into an embedded Microsoft Word Document object that is in a Microsoft Excel worksheet, the embedded Microsoft Graph Chart object may not open as expected.

When you attempt to open the embedded Microsoft Graph Chart object, you receive the following error message:
Microsoft Word can't start the application required to open this object. An error occurred and this feature is no longer functioning properly. Would you like to repair this feature now?
If you click No, you receive an error message similar to the following:
This object was created in MSGraph. This application is not available to open this object. Make sure the application is properly installed and that it has not been deleted, moved, or renamed.
NOTE: If you click Yes to the first error message, the Installing components for Microsoft Word message box appears. This message is followed by the second error message, and the problem is not resolved.

CAUSE

This problem can occur when you close multilevel embedded objects by clicking back into the original document. When you click into the original document, an embedded object contained inside another embedded object may not update its object's information before it is forced to close.

RESOLUTION

To prevent this problem from occurring, do not click back into the original document to close all embedded objects at the same time. Instead, update and close each embedded object separately, starting with the innermost embedded object.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
