Customized list in Word is unexpectedly redefined (275941)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Word 2003
  • Microsoft Word 2002

This article was previously published under Q275941

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word, you can customize a list in the Bullets and Numbering dialog box, and you can then type a name for the customized list in the ListNum field list name box in the Customize Outline Numbered List dialog box.

If you apply the customized list (list format A) to a paragraph and then apply a different customized list format (list format B) to that same paragraph, Word redefines list format A to be the same as list format B, instead of applying list format B.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Word is designed to apply a change in a numbered list to all elements in the list. To apply changes to an entire list, Word must redefine the list format that the list uses.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, always turn off the numbering feature in a list (select the list, and then click Numbering on the Formatting toolbar) before you apply a new list format.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
