Text-wrapping break causes indent in Document Map preview in Word 2002 (275933)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2002

This article was previously published under Q275933
For a Microsoft Word 2000 version of this article, see 204492.

SYMPTOMS

When you view your document in Microsoft Word 2002, using the Document Map feature (on the View menu), one of your headings may be unexpectedly indented.

For example, your headings may appear as follows:
   Heading 1
    Heading 2
   Heading 3

This behavior can occur if all of the following conditions are true:
  • Your document contains a picture object formatted to wrap text.
  • Your document contains multiple headings.
  • One of the headings is preceded by a text-wrapping break.
For example, your document may appear as follows:
     _/\_//\\_/\_ Heading 1 <paragraph mark>
    |**Picture***| <text-wrapping break>
    |***Object***|
     \_/\_/\_/\_/
   Heading 2 <paragraph mark>
   Heading 3 <paragraph mark>

NOTE: To display the nonprinting characters such as paragraph marks and text-wrapping breaks in the document, click the Show/Hide button on the standard toolbar.

In this example, the text-wrapping break ends Heading 1 and forces Heading 2 to continue below the picture object (table or other item). Heading 3 continues on the next blank line that does not contain a picture or table aligned with the left or right margin.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because if a text-wrapping break precedes a heading, the heading is indented one character in the Document Map. The text-wrapping break (like a forced line break) appears as a space in the Document Map.
