  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

This article was previously published under Q275551

SYMPTOMS

Various fixes and SMTP service enhancements are included with Microsoft Exchange 2000, but are not included as part of the standard version of Windows 2000. You do not need to install these fixes and service enhancements if your computer is running Exchange 2000 because these fixes are included in Exchange 2000 and are added to transport events in the Windows 2000 SMTP Service. However, if you are using the Windows 2000 SMTP service without Exchange 2000, you need to install Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2) to benefit from these fixes and enhancements. You do not need to make any configuration changes.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Windows 2000 was released before Exchange 2000 was released. Between the two releases, several changes were made, and those changes were included with Exchange 2000.

STATUS

The fixes and SMTP service enhancements that were made between the release of Windows 2000 and Exchange 2000 have been incorporated in Windows 2000 SP2.

MORE INFORMATION

Windows 2000-based computers do not need to be running Exchange 2000 to take advantage of these fixes and SMTP service enhancements.
