PPT2001: "PowerPoint Cannot Open the File" Error Message When You Open PowerPoint Movie File (275545)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft PowerPoint 2001 for Macintosh
This article was previously published under Q275545 SYMPTOMS
When you try to open a PowerPoint movie file, you may receive the following error message:
PowerPoint cannot open the file (path:filename). The file may be corrupt, in use, or of a type not recognized by PowerPoint.
When you click OK, the message box disappears and the file is not opened.
CAUSE
This error message occurs if the Include original presentation data (increases file size) check box is not selected when you create the movie in PowerPoint. (To view this check box, click Preferences on the Edit menu, click the General tab, and then click Movie Options. The check box is listed under Save.)
If you save a movie file in PowerPoint and do not include the original presentation data, you cannot open or edit the movie file in PowerPoint.
RESOLUTION
If you need an editable movie file, you must select the Include original presentation data (increases file size) check box, and create a new file.
MORE INFORMATION
The option to exclude original presentation data provides a secure method for distributing presentations as movie files that can only be viewed and not opened or edited. You can safely distribute the movie without worrying about anyone making changes and reusing the presentation for their own purposes.
Although this method is not the same as password protection, which is a frequently requested PowerPoint feature, it does allow you to protect intellectual property, while enabling distribution and viewing of a show.
