The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft PowerPoint 2001 for Macintosh
This article was previously published under Q275540 SUMMARY
PowerPoint 2001 has a new feature that lets you save presentations as QuickTime movies that you can edit in PowerPoint. The feature creates a single file that you can play on any computer that has QuickTime version 3.0 or later installed.
This article describes the available movie options.
MORE INFORMATION
To change your movie options, click Preferences on the Edit menu, click the General tab, and then click Movie Options.
You can change the following movie options.
Size and QualityOptimization
The Optimization setting lets you control the balance between file size, smooth playback, and visual quality of the PowerPoint movie. You have four choices:
- Automatic (Normal): This is the default setting. It strikes a balance between file size, smooth playback, and visual quality, such that none are optimized.
- Size: The file is optimized for small file size, at the expense of smooth playback and visual quality. This option is useful if you have limited disk space on which to save the file.
- Smooth Playback: The file is optimized for smooth playback by sacrificing small file size and visual quality.
- Quality: The file is optimized for visual quality by sacrificing small file size and smooth playback.
Movie Dimensions
The Movie Dimensions setting determines how much screen space the QuickTime Player uses to play the movie. The screen space is determined by the movie dimensions as well as the resolution of the monitor on which the movie is viewed. You have three choices:
- 640 x 480: The movie will be 640 pixels wide and 480 pixels tall.
- Current screen size: The movie will use the current screen resolution that is set in the Monitors control panel.
- Custom: Use this to specify a width and height in pixels, between 100 and 2,000 each. These settings do not affect the page setup size for the presentation. You must maintain the aspect ratio of the presentation's page setup settings, or the movie will stretch to fit the dimensions that you specify.
When you specify the movie dimensions, take care to meet the needs of everyone in your audience. A movie dimension that is too large relative to the audience's monitor resolution could result in the movie appearing truncated.
Media Settings
Under Media Settings, you can control the transitions that the PowerPoint movie uses, and can add a separate audio track to play in the background of the movie.
Slide Transitions
You have four choices:
- None: Any transitions in the presentation are stripped from the PowerPoint movie. If slide timings are specified, they are preserved. If no slide timings are specified, a default of two seconds is used.
Choose the None setting if your presentation contains interactivity, such as hyperlinks, action buttons, or animations. All of the other Slide Transitions options disable interactivity and animations in your movie. - Follow Slide Show settings: Transition effects and slide timings are preserved. Interactivity and animations are lost. All PowerPoint transitions are converted to QuickTime transitions. For more information, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

- Use QuickTime transition: Transition effects in the PowerPoint presentation are replaced by the current default QuickTime effect. If the default QuickTime effect is Random, the effect applied to each slide might be different each time you save the movie. Slide timings are preserved.
- Select QuickTime transition: This setting lets you specify a QuickTime effect as the transition for all slides in the movie. Regardless of which effect you choose, slide timings are preserved (if set), or default to two seconds (if not).
Background Soundtrack
The Background soundtrack setting lets you add a soundtrack to a PowerPoint movie. You have two choices:
Loop Movie
Select the Loop movie check box to have the PowerPoint movie loop continuously until stopped.
Show Movie Player Controls
Select the Show movie player controls check box to have the movie controls displayed in the QuickTime Player.
Show Animations
Select the Show animations check box if you want animated shapes to animate in the PowerPoint movie. QuickTime treats animated objects as separate items, called "sprites" (a QuickTime term). PowerPoint animation effects are converted to sprite animations for PowerPoint movies, which results in different animations in the movie than in the original PowerPoint presentation.
SaveInclude Original Presentation Data
If the Include original presentation data check box is selected when you click Make Movie on the File menu, PowerPoint saves the original PowerPoint presentation data with the movie file. This lets you open and edit the QuickTime movie file in PowerPoint.
If the Include original presentation data check box is not selected, you cannot open and edit the movie file in PowerPoint. This provides a secure method for distributing a non-editable version of a PowerPoint presentation.
Credits
When you click Credits, you receive a dialog box in which you can type information about the movie. The credits are not displayed as part of the movie. To view the credits, open the movie in the QuickTime Player, and click Get Info on the Movie menu.
The fields in the PowerPoint dialog box correspond to QuickTime credit properties in the Info window as follows:
