This article was previously published under Q275539

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to open Windows Help or to click the Index tab in Windows Help, you may receive the following error message:
HH caused an Invalid Page Fault in ITSS.DLL
When you close this dialog box, you may receive the following error message:
HH caused an Invalid Page Fault in Unknown

CAUSE

This issue can occur if an Index file for the Help section that you are using is damaged.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, delete the .chw (Index) file for the Help item. The following steps outline how to delete all Help index files, including the damaged one. The Help index files are rebuilt automatically the next time you open Help and click the Index tab.
  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  2. Type *.chw in the Search For box. Make sure that you are searching in "My Computer" and you click to select the Search Subdirectories check box.
  3. Click Find Now.
  4. Click Edit from the menu bar and click Select All.
  5. Press the DELETE key on the keyboard. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to move files to the Recycle Bin.
  6. Close the window and open Help.
  7. Click the Index tab. Windows Help rebuilds the index file and creates a new .chw file.

NOTE: This process deletes all Help index files because it can be difficult to determine exactly which index file is damaged. These files are rebuilt automatically the next time you click the Index tab in any Help file. It is, however, unlikely that all Help index files are damaged.
