ENT2001: Cannot Send Messages with Hotmail Account (275480)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Entourage 2001 for Mac

This article was previously published under Q275480

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to use Entourage to send messages from a Microsoft Hotmail account, the operation may not work. In some cases, you may receive the following error message:
Access to the resource has not been authorized.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if you begin an Entourage session and attempt to send a message from a Hotmail account when no new messages have been received from the account.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:

Method 1

Wait until you receive a new message from your Hotmail account before you attempt to send a message from the account. If you receive new messages from your Hotmail account during an Entourage session, you can send messages from the Hotmail account during the same session.

To ensure that you receive a new message from your Hotmail account, you can send a message from a different e-mail account to the Hotmail account. You can also subscribe to a mailing list that sends at least one message a day to your Hotmail account, and then create a schedule in Entourage that checks for new messages automatically each time you start Entourage. To create such a schedule:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Schedules.
  2. Click New.
  3. In the Name box, type a name for the schedule (for example, Receive on Start).
  4. Under When, click At Startup.
  5. Under Action, click Receive Mail, and then click the Hotmail account in the From list.
  6. Click OK.

Method 2

Set up a new account that sends messages by using a Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server and uses your Hotmail address as the reply address:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Accounts, and then click New.
  2. If the Account Setup Assistant is displayed, click Configure Account Manually.
  3. In the New Account dialog box, click POP in the Account Type list, and then click OK.
  4. In the Account Name box, type a descriptive name for the account (for example, Hotmail - Send Only).
  5. In the Name box, type your name as you want it to appear in the From box of messages that you send from the account.
  6. In the E-mail Address box, type the e-mail address for your Hotmail account.
  7. In the SMTP Server box, type the address of the SMTP server that you want to use when you send messages from the account. Your Internet service provider (ISP) can provide this information.

NOTE: You do not need to type a Post Office Protocol (POP) server address in the POP Server box.
  8. Click OK.
  9. When a message is displayed that states that you can only send messages from the account, click OK.
