OL2000: The Outlook Personal Folders (.pst) Backup Add-in Causes Outlook to Quit on the Japanese Version of Windows Me (275451)

When you install the Outlook Personal Folders (.pst) Backup add-in on the Japanese version of Windows Millennium (Me), Outlook 2000 quits when you start it.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because the Outlook Personal Folders (.pst) Backup add-in internally uses a memory variable without first initializing it. On most versions of Microsoft Windows, this is not a problem because that memory area is NULL. However, in the Japanese version of Windows Me this value is not NULL. The area of memory that is being referenced has what appears to be a "valid" address. When that "valid" address is used, the Outlook Personal Folders (.pst) Backup add-in program quits.
RESOLUTIONA supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Outlook service pack that contains this hotfix.
