WD2001: Error Message When You Save an Older Version of a Document (275416)

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Versions feature in Word and you try to save an older version of a document, the file is not saved, and the following error message appears:
The disk is full or too many files are open. (document name)

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use either of the following methods.

Method 1: Copy and Save the Version in a New Word Document

To copy the version to a new Word document, follow these steps:
  1. In Word, click Versions on the File menu.
  2. Select the version that you want to save, and then click Open.
  3. On the Edit menu, click Select All.
  4. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
  5. Create a new document.
  6. On the Edit menu, click Paste.
  7. On the File menu, click Save.
  8. Name the document, and then click Save.

Method 2: Save the Version as a Web Page or as a Rich Text Format Document

To save the version as a Web page or as a Rich Text Format document, follow these steps:
  1. In Word, click Versions on the File menu.
  2. Select the version that you want to save, and then click Open.
  3. On the File menu, click Save As.
  4. In the Format box, choose a format such as Web Page or Rich Text Format.
  5. Name the document, and then click Save.
