SYMPTOMS

When you apply several different language formats to portions of text in a Microsoft Word document, therefore indicating that the proofing tools specific to each language should be used to check the spelling and grammar, the program appears to slow down and become unresponsive. Word may then quit unexpectedly and either of the following behaviors may occur:
  • You receive the following error message:
Word cannot start the spelling checker.

Make sure there is enough memory available.Make sure the correct spelling files are installed.Make sure the Apple Text Encoding Converter and Text Encodings are of the same version.

You may be unable to clear this message when you click OK, and you may have to press COMMAND+OPTION+ESCAPE to force-quit Microsoft Word. If, after many tries to clear the error message, you succeed, Word may quit and display the following error message:
The application "Microsoft Word" has unexpectedly quit, because an error of type 2 occurred.

You should save your work in other open programs and restart the computer.
    -or-

  • You receive the following error message:
The application "Microsoft Word" has unexpectedly quit, because an error of type 25 occurred.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur after you apply four or more different language formats, depending on how much memory you allocate to Word.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, limit your use of language formats to no more than four languages.
