WD2001: Word Disconnects the Data Source When a Field Name Is Changed (275359)

SYMPTOMS

When you change the name of a field in the data source of a merge document and that field is used in sorting or filtering the data, you receive the following error message:
This merge document contains outdated sorting information. Word is removing it.
Word disconnects the merge document from the data source.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, follow these steps:
  1. Delete the merge fields from the main merge document.
  2. In the Data Merge Manager, click Get Data, and then click Open Data Source. Navigate to the data source file that you want, select it, and then click Open.
  3. Drag the fields from the Merge Field section of the Data Merge Manager and position them in the main merge document.
  4. Set any Query Options and proceed with the merge operation.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
