WD2001: Word Stops Responding When Merge Operation Is Cancelled Prematurely (275357)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2001 for Macintosh

This article was previously published under Q275357

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to send a merge document to the printer, and that document contains one or more ASK fields, the printing progress message hides the ASK prompt dialog box. Because you cannot type data and click OK in the ASK prompt dialog box, it is impossible to complete the merge operation. If you click Cancel on the printing progress message, the message disappears and reveals the ASK prompt dialog box. However, if you then click OK or Cancel in the ASK prompt dialog box, nothing happens, and Word stops responding (hangs).

RESOLUTION

Press CONTROL+OPTION+ESCAPE to force Word to quit.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, click the Title bar of the printing progress message and drag it out of the way of the ASK prompt dialog box. Proceed with the merge operation by typing data in the ASK prompt and then clicking OK until all the records have been merged.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
