WD2001: COMMAND+M Does Not Change List Numbering Format of Outline Numbered List (275354)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2001 for Macintosh

This article was previously published under Q275354

SYMPTOMS

In an outline numbered list in Microsoft Word, when you press COMMAND+M, the selected paragraph is indented, but the list numbering format is not changed the same way that it is when you click Increase Indent on the Formatting toolbar.

CAUSE

COMMAND+M and Increase Indent perform similar but different functions. Pressing COMMAND+M and clicking Increase Indent on the Formatting toolbar both indent the selected paragraph to the next tab stop or indent contents of selected items to the right by one character width of the standard font.

When you click Increase Indent or Decrease Indent on the Formatting toolbar, you also change the list numbering format, for example, from (i) to (a).

Pressing COMMAND+M does not change the list numbering format; however, you can press TAB or SHIFT+TAB to perform this function from the keyboard.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, change the level of items in a simple list by pressing TAB or SHIFT+TAB, or by clicking Increase Indent or Decrease Indent on the Formatting toolbar.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Word 2001 for Mac.
