SYMPTOMS

When you create a merge document in Microsoft Word 6,x, and then you attempt to attach a data source that was created in Word 98 or Word 2001, you cannot connect to the data source. If you are connected to a Word 98 or Word 2001 data source, and you attempt to perform the merge operation, the operation stops at a particular record and does not merge any subsequent records.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the data source contains the euro currency symbol. When any field name in the data source contains the euro currency symbol, Word cannot connect to the data source. When Word encounters any data record that contains the euro currency symbol, the merge operation stops and no other records are processed.

The euro currency symbol is a new feature in Word 98 and Word 2001, and it is not recognized by Word 6.x.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, either use Word 98 or Word 2001 to perform the merge operation, or remove all instances of the euro currency symbol from the data source.
