The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition
This article was previously published under Q275345 SYMPTOMS
When you open a Word 98 Macintosh Edition document in Rich Text Format (RTF), using Microsoft Word 6.0 for the Macintosh or Microsoft Word 6.0 for Windows, two or more contiguous groups of numbered lists may be renumbered as if there is only one group.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the document was saved in RTF by using Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition.
WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, use either of the following methods.
Method 1: Insert a Break Before Saving in RTF- Insert a break in the list by pressing RETURN.
- Place the insertion point at the beginning of the line where numbering restarts.
- On the Format menu, select Bullets and Numbering and then select Restart numbering.
- Place the insertion point on the inserted line, and then remove the numbering format by clicking the Numbering icon on the Formatting toolbar.
- On the File menu, click Save As, and save the file using Rich Text Format.
Method 2: Renumber the Lists in Word 6- Open the document with the continuous numbering of list items.
- Insert a break where the list numbering restarts by pressing RETURN.
- Place the insertion point on the blank line. Hold the CONTROL key and click the mouse. Select Stop Numbering on the menu.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Office 2001 for Mac.
