Error 1326 and Array Authentication Does Not Work (275285)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0

This article was previously published under Q275285

SYMPTOMS

When you use your Web browser to gain access to Web sites through a Web proxy array that is configured to route either in the array or in a chained, upstream Web proxy configuration, you may receive the following error message:
Error 1326 : Logon failure : unknown username or bad password
When you use your Web browser, Web pages may not load correctly.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if the default Web site that the Web proxy is configured to run under is configured with Basic and Windows NT Challenge/Response authentication or when the proxy server is configured with only Windows NT Challenge/Response authentication. This problem also occurs if the credentials that are used to communicate with the upstream proxy or array, or the credentials that are used to communicate in the array are configured with the Allow encrypted authentication (NT CR) setting.

This problem occurs only if the Web proxy servers are configured with access control.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use the domainname\username format instead of the username format when you type the credentials to communicate with the upstream proxy or array, or the credentials that are used to communicate within the array.

Use the domainname\username format when you type the credentials if you configure the upstream routing or authentication in the array to use the Allow basic/clear text authentication setting instead of the Allow encrypted authentication (NT CR) setting.

You can locate these credentials on the Routing tab in Web Proxy properties. Depending on your configuration, you may have to configure the credentials in three different places on the Routing tab:
  • In the Upstream Routing, Use Web Proxy or array section
  • In the Enable backup route, Use Web Proxy or array section
  • In the Routing within array, Resolve Web Proxy requests within array before routing upstream section

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
