Not All Web Sites Can Be Made Available in Disconnected Mode (275232)

  • Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000

This article was previously published under Q275232

SYMPTOMS

You may want to use the cache pre-stuffing feature in Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server to distribute content to users without giving any indication to those users that they are not actually connected to the Internet. Generally, use this feature when you expect to be disconnected from the Internet, for example, for exhibitions, demonstrations, or marine (submarine) use.

You can configure a routing rule that applies to all destinations and that has a caching option set to Any version of the requested object. Never route the request. However, you may notice that users still receive "error 502 bad gateway" or "unable to connect" error messages on browsers when users connect to certain Web sites.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if the page that the user requests is not found in the cache. The page may not be found in the cache because that page does not meet the criteria for caching. Even if you set the Any version of the requested object. Never route the request option when you create a routing rule, you are still limited to the objects that were previously cached; some pages might contain content that is not cacheable.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use the advanced caching option in ISA Server:
  1. Start the ISA Server Management program, click Cache Configuration, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the Advanced tab, and then change the options to cache dynamic content to include object types that are not generally cached.
