Properties with Spaces Do Not Work Correctly (275188)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001

This article was previously published under Q275188

SYMPTOMS

If you use custom properties that contain spaces, then SharePoint Portal Server does not properly promote them into the Web Storage System nor demote them correctly into the document. You cannot view these property values in the shell or use them in advanced search queries.

Only alphanumeric low-ASCII characters work correctly.

WORKAROUND

Rename properties to not use spaces, and re-enter the values.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Office documents allow you to save additional properties such as Title, Author, and so on, plus your own custom properties. These properties, or metadata, are used to enhance your search queries and to sort your data when you are viewing documents in the workspace.

Properties are configured directly in an Office application by using the Properties option on the File menu, or you use the SharePoint Portal Server document profiles to modify these properties. When you check in your document, the properties that are created in Office along with those that are entered in the document profile are stored in the Web Storage System. Properties that are entered in the document profile are stored in the document itself.

NOTE: Taking Office document properties and storing them in the Web Storage System is referred to as property promotion. Taking SharePoint Portal Server properties from a document profile and storing them in the document itself is referred to as property demotion.
