OFF2000: Error Message: This Update Can Only Be Applied to Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Products (275174)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office 2000 (Setup) Service Release 1 (SR-1)

This article was previously published under Q275174
WARNING:This information is preliminary and has not been confirmed or tested by Microsoft. Use only with discretion.

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install one of the post SR-1 updates (like the Excel/PowerPoint 2000 HTML Script Vulnerability Update), you may receive the following error message, even though Office 2000 SR-1 is installed on your computer:
This update can only be applied to Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 products. Please update all of your Office 2000 products to the SR-1 level

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you have a Windows Installer product that is not correctly installed, or you have an Office 2000 product on which the Office 2000 SR-1 Update is not installed.

RESOLUTION

To troubleshoot this problem, you must verify that your version of Office 2000 is SR-1 for all applicable products. If Microsoft Office 2000 is at SR-1 level for all Office 2000 products, and you continue to experience the problem with the post SR-1 updates, you can manually extract the patch file (.msp) from the download package and apply it.

Make Sure SR-1 Is Applied to All Applicable Products

  1. Using Tools on the Web, the downloaded update (O2ksr1adl.exe), or the SR-1 update CD, re-apply the SR-1 update.
  2. If you are successful in step 1, run the post SR-1 update.

If Problem Still Exists After You Verify That SR-1 Installed Successfully

  1. From Tools on the Web, download the particular update to your desktop.
  2. Extract the contents of the package by using a command line similar to the following:

    path\package name /c /t:c:\unique folder name

where path is the full path to the package location, package name is the name of the .exe download package, and unique folder name is a name for a new folder that is created by the command line.

For example, the following command line extracts the contents of the Excel/PowerPoint 2000 HTML Script Vulnerability Update into the c:\XLPPTUpdate folder:

    c:\Windows\Desktop\Addinsec.exe /c /t:c:\XLPPTUpdate

  3. Using Windows Explorer, open the folder that you created in step 2.
  4. Right-click the .msp patch file in this folder, and then click Apply Patch.
  5. Repeat step 4 for any other .msp files in the folder that was created in step 2.

MORE INFORMATION

Usually, when you try to apply a post SR-1 update to an Office 2000 SR-1 installation, the update creates a log file in the \Temp\OfficeHotfix folder. The name of the log file will be similar to the following:

Office 2000 SR-1 Hotfix(0001)_MsiExec.log

where the four-digit number is incremented every time that you attempt to apply a post SR-1 update.

Therefore, the highest numbered log file is the log file for the last update that you attempted to install. However, in the situation in which you receive the error message in the "Symptoms" section of this article, this log file is not created. This is because the file OHOTFIX9.exe, which is contained in the downloaded package, does not have logging capabilities. The OHOTFIX9.exe file is the program that is automatically run when you double-click on the downloaded package from Tools on the Web. It performs the check to make sure that your Office 2000 installation is at SR-1 level. If it is at SR-1 level, the file then passes a command line to the Windows Installer to apply the update.
