Transitions can only be inserted between clips that are present in the Storyboard or Timeline.

To insert a transition between two clips, you can follow these steps:

  1. Go to Timeline view. Either click the Timeline icon (located to the immediate left of the Storyboard) or select Timeline from the View menu.
  2. Find the two clips to be used for the transition.
  3. Ensure that the current magnification level of the Timeline properly displays the clip. To increase or to decrease the magnification of the Timeline, click either the Zoom In (the second) or the Zoom Out (the third) icon located to the immediate left of the Timeline.
  4. Select the right-hand clip. When selected, the border of the clip has a blue highlight and trim handles are displayed directly above the clip.
  5. Drag the clip (with the left mouse button) to the left until it overlaps the previous clip with the required amount of time for the transition.

To review your transition, select both clips (you can depress the Shift key and select the clips) and press the Play button in the monitor area.

NOTE: Windows Movie Maker has neither menu items nor keystrokes to produce transitions when you use a keyboard.
